Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at electric@engineer.com if you cannot find an answer to your question or use our contact us page.

We provide a wide range of electrical services, from small domestic jobs to large-scale commercial and industrial work. Whether you need new installations, repairs, or maintenance, just give us a call. And if it’s something we don’t do, we’ll usually know the right people who can help.

If you feel an electrical shock or tingle, treat it seriously. The first step is to report it immediately to Western Power (or your local electricity provider if you’re outside their area) on 13 13 52. You should also seek medical advice without delay. A shock or tingle is a sign of a fault in your electrical system and should not be ignored.

This is a common problem. Here’s what might be happening:

  • Circuit breaker tripped: You may have overloaded the circuit by running too many high-power appliances (like heaters, kettles, or dryers) at the same time. Try unplugging one and using it on a different circuit.

  • RCD (safety switch) tripped: RCDs trip when there’s a fault or moisture in the system (often from outdoor leads or appliances). Unplug everything on that circuit, reset the RCD, then plug items back in one by one until you find the faulty one. Don’t forget hidden sockets for things like fridges, dishwashers, or microwaves.

Blown fuse: If you still have an old fuse-board, a burned out fuse wire could be the issue. These boards are outdated and less safe we recommend upgrading to modern safety devices.

If you can’t fix the problem after these checks, it’s time to call us.

Whilst we love a bargain, as licensed electrical contractors, we are legally required to ensure that every appliance we install meets Australian Standards and carries the necessary regulatory compliance mark. This mark confirms the product has been tested for safety and is approved for use in Australia. Installing appliances without this certification not only breaches regulations but also creates serious risks, including electrical faults, fire hazards, and potential insurance complications. For your safety and peace of mind, we will only install compliant, approved products.

It depends! If your new appliance comes with a standard 10A or 15A plug (like many LED downlights, extractor fans, and some ovens), you can simply unplug the old one and plug in the new one.

However, if it doesn’t come with a plug and needs to be hardwired (or if a socket needs to be installed) this must be done by a licensed electrical contractor. Not only is this the legal requirement, but it also ensures the work is safe, insured, and completed to Australian standards.

Yes and it’s very important! Your RCD protects people, pets, and livestock from serious electric shock. Manufacturers usually recommend testing monthly or quarterly.

  • Reason 1: To make sure it actually works there’s no point having a safety device that won’t trip in an emergency.

  • Reason 2: Pressing the test button keeps the mechanism moving. The more regularly it’s exercised, the faster it will trip when needed and in the event of an electric shock, every fraction of a second counts.

Regular testing is a small step that makes a big difference to safety.
